While many sources of tap water and groundwater are perfectly safe, it's never worth the risk to drink water you aren't certain about. Even if it looks clean, it could be contaminated with bacteria, viruses, protozoa or other microorganisms invisible to the human eye. And despite the Safe Drinking Water Act, tap water can still contain contaminants such as arsenic, lead, chlorine, pesticides and even particles from malfunctioning wastewater treatment. 

I usually don't buy bottled water, and I don't have a faucet filter, so I often drink this tap water unaltered. I thoroughly cleaned each bottle and charged them overnight to ensure they were ready for testing. Then, I used each bottle for three days in place of my normal stainless steel reusable bottle.

The Larq bottle is made of vacuum-insulated stainless steel and keeps your water cold for up to 24 hours. It's sleek and aesthetically appealing -- my only complaint was that there's no groove or curve to fit your hand. You could always purchase the limited-edition bottle sleeve to solve that problem. 

Because this bottle has so many parts, it's pretty difficult to clean. There's no way to get your hand or a brush inside the bottle, and the foam interior makes me worry that the inside can never get completely clean and dry. However, the website does say that it's not necessary to completely dry the Sawyer Select bottle, as the foam is also designed to prevent mold and bacteria growth. 

All of these brands have received multiple customer reviews on Amazon -- the bottles on this list are all in the four-star range with mostly favorable reviews on Amazon (no one can please everyone). From basic bottles to portable pouches to all-day canteens, try replacing your plastic water bottles with one of these reusable models. 

The Mahaton bottle can last up to three weeks on a full charge, assuming you run the purification cycle up to four times per day. That's slightly less than the CrazyCap and the Larq, but not such a short battery life that you'll feel burdened with charging the bottle.

On the opposite end of the scale, under extracted brews tend to have undeveloped flavors. Lacking sugars and other caramelized organic chemicals, these shots will taste sour, weak and watery.      

If your vacuum came with a cleaning tool in the box, use it to make quick work of any coiled strands you find. Don't be afraid to dive in and dig out debris with your fingers too. I often find the best tools for the job are your bare hands.
