In "The Only Child," Korean author Mi-ae Seo delivers a sometimes frightening psychological thriller with echoes of "The Silence of the Lambs" and "The Bad Seed." But the characters are only explored on the surface, the plot doesn´t break new ground and never reaches deep into the creepiness factor.

The history of the world's biggest shopping day of the year begins with a much smaller, lonelier numeral -- the number 1. The unofficial Chinese holiday celebrated every Nov. 11 started out as Singles Day in 1993, when students at Nanjing University in China's Jiangsu province began hosting singles parties meant to counter the negative social stigma associated with singlehood. Since this was a holiday designed to bring singles together, they chose the date with the most 1s -- 11/11 -- to celebrate. And it only grew from there, especially after being supercharged by Chinese retail giants Alibaba and JD in the more recent online era -- right down to including a giant Taylor Swift concert to boot. 

The movie has been No. 1 at the South Korean box office since opening a week ago and had sold 9.7 billion won ($8.3 million) in tickets by Sunday, according to the latest data from the Korean Film Council.

Thus far, efforts to internationalize the big shopping day haven't caught on -- the date is Veterans Day in the US, Armistice Day in Europe. But in the end, it may come down to semantics and SEO: Whether you call it a Veterans Day sale, an early Black Friday sale or a Singles Day sale -- a deal's a deal, right?

Part of its box office success appears to come from South Korean women buying tickets in support of a cause without actually going to the cinema, many social media posts indicate, a practice known in South Korea as "sending one's soul".

With almost $31 billion in retail sales last year alone, China's yearly 24-hour 11/11 Global Shopping Festival is now bigger than Thanksgiving, Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the weekend in between combined. Adobe Analytics predicts this year's five-day Thanksgiving weekend will drive about $29 billion in online sales. In the story, forensic psychologist Yi Seonkyeong is teaching criminal psychology to college students in Seoul when she receives an unusual request that could propel her career. Condemned serial killer Yi Byeongdo has agreed to talk to her with no limits on their conversation. Seonkyeong has no idea why the killer, who has refused previous interviews with more famous psychologists, has reached out to her.

"Although there were some parts that seemed exaggerated for storytelling, it touched on realities in South Korean society that keep women of different generations from the life they wanted to lead," she said.

Seonkyeong is increasingly disturbed by the girl´s sullen attitude marked by occasional violent outbursts. She begins to see parallels between the girl and Yi Byeongdo. Both were horribly abused as children and neither seems to have empathy for others. The old debate of nature or nurture preys on Seonkyeong´s mind.

Seonkyeong has been nicknamed Clarice for the "Silence of the Lambs" character, but the plot relies too much on this trope and moves on a predictable path. Seonkyeong wonders if Hayeong is a bad seed or if she can work to change the child´s personality.

She´s only begun the interviews when she's distracted by developments in her personal life. Her new husband wants his 11-year-old daughter Hayeong, to live with them. Hayeong, whose mother committed suicide a few years, has been living with her grandparents, who die in a house fire.
