Lake Oroville has been the site of intense environmental resistance since it was first discovered in 1922. In the 1990s, the Army Corps of Engineers declared the reservoir a national historical site.
Lake Oroville reservoir's level peaked at 27,400 feet in September of 2005. It dropped to an average of 6,200 feet by December of 2010 due to the prolonged drought. The reservoir is now at 17,000 feet, where it stands in the middle of two reservoirs: one in Kern County at 10,000 feet, and another nearby on Mount Carmel.
