Shanghai close poultry markets as bird flu death toll rises to 546
The outbreak, which has struck at least 26 countries, was believed to be spreading from China to Europe, where there have been similar cases.
Officials said the disease was caused by the variola virus, 바카라 and although there had been no cases in the United States, it was feared the deadly virus was circulating there.
The outbreak began on Monday morning, with the highest reported count at 484 in Guangzhou, 바카라 the state capital.
There are currently more than 20,000 reported cases worldwide.
China says it was in contact with Hong Kong on Tuesday and the WHO said it was also "taking strong measures" to contain the disease.
"There is no reason for panic, we should instead be concerned about a very serious and worrying trend, in that the majority of confirmed cases in mainland China were from Hong Kong," an official said at a press briefing.
Hong Kong, like many mainland Chinese, is an official travel area.
An airport official in Hangzhou, Guangzhou, said authorities were not aware of any cases but there was a high risk of further spread.
"It has already spread into Taiwan, but they are having to control it," the official said. "We want to make sure there is no further spread."
Viruses can often spread in China in a matter of months.
The WHO had earlier urged the public to take precautions against the spread of the virus.
"In recent days, particularly in Guangzhou, Shanghai, and many cities, there have been reports of bird flu in children, in adults and in people with respiratory conditions," said the WHO's spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric.
"Those suffering from respiratory infections should seek advice from their health authorities."
But while the virus can be fatal in people, the rare form of the disease can have a milder effect than that caused by the main strain.

The highest recorded case of bird flu was in 2007 and this, 바카라 says the BBC's Lucy Williamson in Beijing.
"The current record-high of 52 deaths has come from the capital city of Beijing after the second incident involving human-to-human transmission of the virus in four days, on 11 August," our correspondent adds.
A woman fell ill as she prepared a batch of food in a home in a residential area of Beijing on August 10. Her death has led officials to declare a public health emergency.
