id="mod_42386863">What is Romanticism?
Romanticism (18th to 19th century AD) was a reaction again formal logic as a freedom of self-expression and artists' reaction to inhumanity. Romanticism emerged as a response to the values of reason and order that were praised by the former art movement, Neoclassicism. Incorporation of symbolic ownership, beauty and religious ideals is expressed as a physical reflection on history. Figurative art takes a philosophical approach to the ideals of "human condition" in juxtaposition to nature. Social injustice in relation to politics and religion has been the driving forces for artists such as Theodore Gericault in reaction to the inhumanity around them.

History behind The Raft of Medusa
A new freedom of style, new mediums and self expression towards nature is incorporated in to this movement to create a personal, passionate and intimate reaction from the audience. Scenes of shipwrecks culminated in 1819 with Théodore Gericault's strikingly original Raft of the Medusa. The work was based on the wreck of a French frigate off the coast of Senegal in 1816, with over 150 soldiers on board. The frigate was initially captained by an officer of the Ancient Régime who had not sailed for over twenty years and who ran the ship aground on a sandbank. Due to the shortage of lifeboats, those who were left behind had to build a raft for 150 souls. The construction drifted away on a bloody 13-day odyssey that was to save only 10 lives. Gericault reacts to Géricault drew his inspiration from the account of two survivors of the Medusa.

Theodore Gericault's Self Portrait
Source Gericault's Methodology
Géricault spent a long time preparing the composition of this painting, which he intended to exhibit at the Salon of 1819. He began by amassing documentation and questioning the survivors, whom he sketched; he then worked with a model and wax figurines, studied severed cadavers in his studio, used friends as models, and hesitated between a number of subjects. The result of this long preparatory period can be seen in two sketches now in the Louvre. There followed the period of solitary work in his studio, spent getting to grips with a vast canvas measuring five meters by seven. The painter researched the story in detail and made numerous sketches before deciding on his definitive composition, which illustrates the hope of rescue. Accordingly, the human and political aspects of this horrific event greatly interested Géricault.

The Mutiny on the Raft by Gericault
A sketch of the raft when Gericault was deciding how his artwork should look | Source Cannibalism on the Raft of Medusa
Cannibalism on the Raft of the Medusa, crayon, ink wash, and gouache on paper, 28 cm 38 cm, Louvre. This study is darker than the final work, and the positions of the figures differ significantly from those of the later painting. | Source Analysis of The Raft of Medusa
The artist provocatively reacts to the event through his vivid use of lines, tones as The Raft of the Medusa became an icon of the emerging Romantic style. Rumours of cannibalism, mutiny and murder occurred as survivors of the shipwreck were thrown into the fight for survival in its dramatic explicitness, emotional intensity, and conspicuous lack of a hero. According to Gerricault;

"Neither poetry nor painting can ever do justice to the horror and anguish of the men in the raft," as his reflection of inhumanity is embedded in the work.

The Raft of the Medusa (Gricault)
Composition
Striking interlocking triangles, a common feature in Renaissance and Baroque paintings, expresses Géricault's academic training. Gericault decision in separating the victims represents his morbid perspective on the event. Four divisions of the survivors on the raft consists of the pallid, moribund corpses and at the centre, the ones who struggle to stand, the ones at the pinnacle of a triangle near the mast whilst the fourth group's apex ends with the African waving the flag. Moreover, Gericault uses his art knowledge to react to the atrocity through his composition. Through the harsh realistic look on the event it is clear that Romantics, as through Gericault's examples, https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Stryhn%20Schneider ([https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Stryhn%20Schneider https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Stryhn%20Schneider]) emphasises the prominence of emotional reactions to the world around them.

French Revolution, Eugene Delacroixs 1830 "Liberty Leading the People"
French Revolution, Eugene Delacroixs 1830 "Liberty Leading the People" The Raft of Medusa and the French Revolution
Gericault furthermore uses symbols to convey his attitudes as perceived through the tattered, abandoned uniforms that lay motionlessly on the raft. This adheres to the abandonment of the captain within the historical event, furthermore symbolising the reasoning behind the French Revolution: the divisions of social classes. Hence the composition of the pyramid satires the social classes as the dying represents the mistreatment of the peasantry class. Therefore, Gericault dramatically responds to the corruption and downfall of the French government as emphasised by the symbolic oxymoron of suffering victims and the abandoned uniforms, and shaping.

Gericault satirically comments on the instability of the French government. This is reflected through the composition as the traumatic atmosphere of the victims act as a personified collapse of the government. For instance the raft creates a pyramid formation over the dying individuals in the lower left corner. Dynamic movements and pathos is indicated through the figure' illustrated in the foreground whilst the active figures are blurred or concealed in shadow. This introduces the notion of the 'survival of the fittest' as another triangle forms beside it with a man desperately waving a flag being at the pinnacle of the triangle. Gericault vividly comments on the motivations of the French Revolution through the pyramids.

Diagram of the pyramid structures in The Raft of Medusa
Diagram showing the outline of the two pyramidal structures that form the basis of the work. The position of the Argus is indicated by the yellow dot. | Source Gericault's use of colour
Gericault responds to the sickening nature of the event. This is communicated by contrast by this given cruel emphasis by a Caravaggio-style chiaroscuro. This is utilised by expression and body language of the figures as some writhe in the elation of hope, while others are oblivious to the passing ship in the far background. Gericault had expressed this with an abundance of verve and boldness of light colours to emphasise illusion of hope against the traumatising event. This creates a powerful paradox to the ideals of beauty and hope of how such drastic emotions could be powerfully evoked into a painting.

Gericault, Raft of the Medusa
The shocking impact the event had on society is explored through Gericault's use of expression and colour. He uses objectivity on the event to depict storm clouds broken by light in contrast to the turbulent waves that are about to swallow the raft. Light hues focuses towards the ship in the distance. Bitterly this works against the putrefaction of cannibalism that is symbolised by the blood stained axe illustrated at the bottom of the raft. The concept of hope is confronted by the reality of the situation which is over emphasised by the father grieving the loss of his son, the two figures signifying despair and solitude.

Additionally, the artist contrasts the ‘face of death' with the rays of hope'. Gericault had expressed this with an abundance of verve and boldness of light colours to emphasise illusion of hope against the the pallid bodies whilst, "the imagination alone produces colour (Gerricault.)" Gericault passionately responds to the putrefying atrocity that shocked the French public.

Related
United StatesHighlights of the National Gallery of Art: A Washington Family Day Trip
by goldenrulecomics20

History of EuropeEffects of Climate on the Origins of the French Revolution
by enewcomer7

History of EuropeThe Old Order: The Monarchy of the French Revolution
by glassvisage27

Genealogy, Family History & Family TreesDid Marie Antoinette Deserve The Death Penalty or She Was Only An Poor Victim of The French Revolution?
by Danyang Li3

Popular
Art Analysis & CriticismPlay Analysis: The Rabbit Hole
by TheHollowLog1

Art Analysis & CriticismFamous paintings of Ophelia by Millais, Waterhouse and other artists
by Amanda Severn37

Art Analysis & CriticismWhat Makes Something Beautiful? 5 Kinds of Beauty
by Rachael Lefler2

Comments
Sign in or sign up and post using a HubPages Network account.

0 of 8192 characters usedPost CommentNo HTML is allowed in comments, but URLs will be hyperlinked. Garmin's latest line of specialized watches look like they're designed for high-end boutiques, rather than your local running gear store. The newly-announced MARQ line of "tool watches" seem pretty interesting-looking. They're also pretty expensive.

Garmin's line of GPS smartwatches previously cracked the $900 barrier with a luxury Fenix running watch, but the MARQ series costs between $1,500 and $2,500, shooting above even the price of watches such as the Wear OS Montblanc Summit 2 (a mere $995 in comparison) and matching the $1,600 Tag Heuer Connected smartwatch.

The MARQ series, according to Garmin, is all about offering specific feature sets in unique luxury models, like top-end watches. It's an interesting approach. All five watches have features that are intended for a particular purpose (hence the "tool watch.") They seem thoughtfully designed with features similar to what you'd find on high-end watches: The complications are tuned to real, useful functions, as opposed to a more generic fitness watch approach.

Five watches, though!
Bottom line: Sporty can be sexy too! Unless it is, this fashion-forward, modern world is not going to allow a dressing item survive the heat. The TAG Heuer Formula 1 Quartz Women's Watch series, inspired by everything concerning the F1 races, is a rare blend between high fashion and function, designed for women who are making it big effortlessly in this fast-paced world.

Differences & similarities:

Every TAG Heuer Women's Watch is a bright example that shows performance can be obtained without moving out from the domains of femininity and luxury. A second circle within the face being one of its defining characteristics, the Formula One is as diverse as 27 different varieties, determined by their case sizes, number of diamonds used, finish, colors and choice of materials, which range from stainless steel to ceramics; white to black diamond - even gold. Choice of movements includes Swiss quartz and Swiss mechanical automatics; however, it Is the quartz-based TAG Heuer Watches that are more preferred, being easier to use and maintain.

Despite the aesthetic similarities, a TH Women's Watch is a very different watch from the automatic. There are seven marked differences esthetically between the two:

i. Logo: The TAG Heuer Watch will bear a logo in green and red as opposed to the white of the automatic.

ii. Crown: The TAG Heuer Watch lacks the indented stripe on the winding crown unlike its automatic siblings.

iii. Bezel: https://www.spreaker.com/user/11816381 [[https://www.spreaker.com/user/11816381 www.spreaker.com]] The TAG Heuer Watch sports a bezel that has more markings on it than the bezel on an automatic.

iv. Standard seconds: No split-seconds intervals; only shows standard seconds.

v. The Dial: The Tag Heuer Watches have the brand name printed in white over the dial while the words Formula 1 are printed in red just beneath the brand name.

vi. The Date Window: For the F1 quartz models, it is a larger, easier to read font for the date.

vii. Hands: Here, it's a very subtle difference, which is no TAG emblem on the seconds-hand of the F1 quartz models.

In the end:

The perfect watch to wrap around a high-speed lifestyle, the TAG Heuer Watch is the product of advanced technologies, the same ones found in the Formula 1 equipment and circuits. Tough enough to please the pros, yet as comfortable to become your everyday, go-to watch; the Tag Heuer Formula One Quartz Women's Watch has been developed keeping in mind the choice and the intense life conditions an urban woman has to go through from time-to-time.

CreationWatches.sg is Singapore's premier ecommerce store for Wrist Watches.
Click Here For More Information : Tag Heuer Watches And Tag Heuer Formula One Quartz

The sports watches, starting off as a typically male-oriented category, were big, heavy and tended more to be on the utility side than pertaining to dressiness. They had to be highly durable and efficient at any cost, not stylish or fashionable. TAG Heuer ideated to make them open to women by adding the feminine factors, without cutting down anything that would affect the durability or precision. The TAG HeuerWatch was born thus. Lightweight, accurate and less prone to shocks and bumps because of a quartz movement inside, it is free from all kind of maintenances a mechanical watch would have asked for otherwise.

The Formula 1 series is a very fruitful result of TAG Heuer's association with legendary sports events; the modernity of the crafting mechanisms defining its Swiss character. The Formula 1 thus established itself as the unpretentiously sporting TAG Heuer watch that is OK to be worn anywhere between the field and the wedding hall.

A pleasant and intriguing balance of steel and ceramic; they create a striking contrast that catches ones attention almost immediately. The dial is slightly bigger compared to other women's watches but its fusion of high performance sports features with a very feminine look makes it fit the evening gown as much as your business suit. The scratch resistant sapphire crystal enhances the sparkles from within, giving the ceramic dial a gleaming appearance.

The low-cost, innovative TAG Watch is neither too expensive, nor too conservative in its design. It retains the spirit of the original Formula 1 watches - the Series 1. It stands out even today because of:

The TAG Heuer Watches For Women showcases the peaceful cohabitation of steel, ceramic and precious stones, the ceramic present both in the bracelet and the dial without creating conflicts or eyesores. The ceramic dial houses the diamond marker well and firm and ensures they don't come off in case of a hard hit. From the top, the sapphire crystal is very much expected.

The case-back, as always, is engraved with the TAG Heuer logo. Beneath the screwed down stainless steel cover is a Swiss quartz movement, [http://www.pearltrees.com/hollandpenn10 http://www.pearltrees.com/hollandpenn10] one of the bests you can find in the industry. Till you cross a depth of 200m, the case back will keep the water away.

The Tag Heuer Formula One Quartz Women's Watch is an ideal piece for ladies who love slightly bigger dials than the petite ones, which helps them to stay correct both in a fashionistic and monetary sense. Take the TAG Heuer Formula Women's Watch as a sporty tradition emerging as a glamorous fashion statement.

We are a well-established online retailer of watches with customers from all around the world.
Click Here For More Information : Tag Heuer Formula One Quartz And TAG Heuer Watches For Women
