British man admits hitting bali officer with bottle lawyer says it is 'disgraceful'
A South African-born man has admitted to killing a female officer while she was protecting a bottle from men who have been caught with alcohol on their hands.
Daniel Van Dyk was released on bail at Pretoria police station on Wednesday.
He will appear in court again on Thursday to answer to charges of manslaughter, attempting murder and using a weapon to injure the complainant.
He had appeared at Pretoria High Court in April charged with criminal assault causing serious harm to the complainant.
The woman was driving a taxi at 1.34am on February 23, 2014, when she was hit by a man who, without her consent, was driving a black Hyundai with black flags flying on its roof.
He then smashed the cab window and tried to ram the vehicle into another taxi that was parked at the side of the road. The victim fled with the victim's lifeguard while the attackers fled the scene.
Police found the taxi near the police station a few days later after it had been reported missing, with CCTV footage suggesting that the driver may have been the culprit.
Van Dyk, who was born in South Africa and 바카라 was also a dual citizen, was seen driving the taxi by officers who were called after the man, known only as "C" or "M", ran up to the cab and punched a police officer.
The taxi was later found near a railway platform and the woman gave details about the incident to police on February 24.
Van Dyk, 46, told police in a statement he thought the woman had run off with alcohol and was drunk. He said he grabbed the bottle from the female officer and smashed it against her side.
Van Dyk told investigators that he then threw the bottle at a truck passing near his taxi, but as he ran into the cab the bottle landed on the windscreen of the truck.
According to Pretoria police, there is no record of Van Dyk being charged with alcohol offences in South Africa, but he faces charges in France, Belgium and the Netherlands where alcohol is legal.
It comes just days after police in France arrested a British man after he smashed the front windows of a taxi with a bottle and stole a bottle of alcohol he believed was from a bar.
