Books don't get opened, tele-seminars aren't attended, workshops are forgotten and much more. It isn't really the fault of the author, Instructional Design or trainer for these problems. While there are things that these people can do to improve the results gained from their products, in the end it isn't their responsibility.

Sure, there is some bad eLearning out there. Just because someone can use eLearning authoring software, doesn't mean they know anything about adult learning principles. The same applies to face to face trainers - just because someone knows their subject well, doesn't mean they know how to transfer that knowledge into meaningful and engaging learning (telling isn't training!). Good trainers also have training skills, and good elearning courses have been built around solid Instructional Design principles.
We will never know how much it cost our business growth because we missed the seminars. However, if I had it to do over again, I still would have missed all the seminars to be able to watch my son play college football. They grow up so fast. At least I have those memories.
