One of Scotland's most prominent conservative politicians has responded to criticism of a joke she made about the rape of a young girl as it drew criticism in Edinburgh.

Nicola Sturgeon, the First Minister, has criticised jokes about the alleged abuse of children at Catholic school in Tayside and said such things were not only "terrible" but "innocent of the child".

The row over the controversial series of jokes, which have caused a diplomatic firestorm since being posted to social media last week, was over a number of statements made by former students at the schools to students at the University of St Andrews and the Royal Military College at Dundee.

Many had questioned the seriousness of the allegations against the former students in one of the comments which had been made by one former student who made comments to several former students about the alleged abuse at Tayside Catholic Grammar and College in the mid-70s. The former student has claimed she was abused when she was nine or 10 years old, as part of a pattern of sex attacks by senior 바카라 students.

When the allegations resurfaced on social media, Ms Sturgeon defended comments made by the former student on the BBC News show, Newsnight.

Ms Sturgeon said: "You have to respect the fact that these kids did terrible things and you have to respect them for that.

"You do that, and what the BBC has done, and we have done the same thing, we've gone along with what they want.

"What happened at the time, what happened at the time with the abuse, what happened in the media is all completely irrelevant to me because if you believe the young people there is nothing to do with it."

Former Students Scotland chairman Andrew Gaughran told The Times the comments were "deeply disappointing"
