Several years ago I participated in a Leadership Development course with 20 other up and coming leaders. We were lead by two instructors who guided us over a 6 month period to explore our potential as leaders. The course required that we pick a project that we would find challenging and that would provide us an opportunity to use our leadership skills. I was in a unique position that in my job at that time I had no projects on the go so I chose to make myself the project.
Who are you? I have two students that received just about the same feedback from me. I went into their answers, and carefully dissected where they had gone wrong - gave them more direction and the opportunity to take another cut at the assignment.
I once led a Leadership Development discussion group with a group of university presidents. As we discussed passion and commitment, a consensus emerged that society has robbed many people of their pride-of-craft. This group of leading academics concluded that universities have been major contributors to the problem. They have helped build a job class system that puts many white-collar professionals well ahead of blue-collar trades people and technicians. But we all agreed that a highly skilled mechanic who loves his or her work and is continually growing and developing in it is a much stronger and productive leader than a doctor who feels trapped in a system he or she despises.
Recession Slayer #3: Get Some Friends: Recession hits all business and those in your area, industry and outside are looking for help too. Now is a very good time to develop mutually beneficial partnerships. In simple terms you offer your products/services to another companies' customers and they do the same in return.
Specialist versus consultant. Small groups of Consultants have now become groups of specialists - CFO Services, Marketing Services, or Management Services. Specialists are Clarity Instructional Clients who do the work, rather than just make recommendations.
Write an article for publication in a local paper, professional journal or organizational newsletter. Do not discount that you are NOT knowledgeable or no one else would be interested in what you do for a living.
Go to Barnes & Noble (either in person or virtually) and scan what books are showing up in the Training / Instructional Design field. It is always good to know about the references, especially if you are called to do a project and you can locate some good resources for current projects.
When creating the design it is always better to find out about the power and weak point of learning students. We always store the point ponder, so that we at all times create cost-efficient quality merchandise or lessons. That we simply are quite particular in customizing the lesson plans wonderful requirement of an instructor and learners. Gee... what if I never went past my techno junk pile I found a 1200 baud, 2400 baud and some big floppy diskettes. If you are into Instructional Design, you are into technology by default. Don't' resist it, don't be intimidated, just learn as much as you can absorb in one area. You cannot be an expert in everything. Then find friends that know the other stuff and rely upon their expertise and help in those areas.
The following are a list of the movies I have found to be powerful in team development. You may some of your own and by all means feel free to share with us your thoughts and how you used the movie. Many can be used for Leadership Development as well. This list is in no particular order.
Don't say you can't line them up because you don't have to do that all alone anymore either. These scrapbook suppliers have thought of everything and they have guides you can put down to line your letters on. They come in straight, curvy, arched, in circles and all kinds of shapes. So you have no excuse for not labeling your pages. If you don't want to buy, or can't buy a lot of supplies, look for a "crop" to which you can go. At crops, you can share supplies with a friend, trade supplies or purchase supplies on the spot. Scrapbook stores have crops and Creative Memories Clarity Instructional Clients have crops that you can go to. You can also host a Creative Memories "crop" and earn some free supplies while having fun with friends in your own home. Creative Memories has some great lettering tools also.
As you gain experience, you will outgrow some jobs or interests. That is normal. When I started out in Instructional Design classes, we used a textbook that you would flip to different pages as you made various decisions based on branched learning.
