I tested three UV-powered self-sanitizing water bottles -- the Larq bottle, the CrazyCap bottle and the Mahaton bottle (which is on Kickstarter, but is fully funded and already shipping products) -- using the tap water from my apartment's kitchen sink. 

Because this bottle has so many parts, it's pretty difficult to clean. There's no way to get your hand or a brush inside the bottle, and the foam interior makes me worry that the inside can never get completely clean and dry. However, the website does say that it's not necessary to completely dry the Sawyer Select bottle, as the foam is also designed to prevent mold and bacteria growth. 

What to look for in a self-cleaning water bottle
You should consider five important factors when choosing a UV-powered water bottle like these: Purification, taste, design, ease of use, capacity and battery life. If you decide to purchase a self-cleaning water bottle, you'll want one that kills as many microbes as possible, produces a good taste, is easy to hold and transport, and lasts for a decent period of time on one charge. 

Use a cotton swab, magic eraser or damp microfiber cloth to wipe the sensors free of grime. Specific points to target include cliff sensors (on the bottom of the robot), optical sensor lenses and laser turrets (both on a robot's top).

Tucked inside your robot's dustbin is an air filter. It's designed to trap fine dust particles inside the bin as air flows through the vacuum. Over time these filters will become clogged with lint, hair and other physical debris. It's a good idea to inspect the filter each time you empty the bin. 

You can pull away dust clogging the filter by hand. A better method is to clear the filter by using a handheld vacuum. This way you won't let dust escape into the air or back onto the floor. Don't wash air filters though with water.

Larq The Larq bottle also has two purification modes: normal and adventure. Normal mode purifies up to 99.99% of pathogens in 60 seconds, and adventure mode purifies up to 99.9999% of water in three minutes. It doesn't seem like much of a difference, but that 0.0099% can make or break water that comes from a stream or other natural source. 

It's a shame I couldn't shoot the iPhone 11 Pro using any of my Moment lenses or my professional Lee Filters. They really help transform landscape photography and are a crucial part of my professional setup when I'm shooting landscapes or cars.

You can activate purification whenever you want by pressing the top of the bottle, but Larq also comes to life every two hours for a 10-second cleaning cycle. I didn't notice any funky smells or films on the inside of the Larq bottle after three days of constant use.

The Lifestraw Go is made of BPA-free plastic throughout. Overall, the Lifestraw Go feels pretty sturdy. I prefer the durability of stainless steel, but it's lightweight and comes with a carabiner, so it would make a good backpacking water bottle.
