According to Brita's website, these bottles aren't intended for outside use -- they're intended for just tap water, like the Astrea bottle -- but this bottle also filtered natural fresh water just fine. The Brita bottle uses an activated carbon filter, which is extremely porous and pulls contaminants, such as chlorine and particulates.

After three days of near-constant use, the bottle didn't show any signs of build-up -- no weird smells, no crusty films.

Paige Thies/CNET The Astrea One bottle filters out an impressive suite of heavy metals and chemicals, including lead, benzene, mercury, copper, chlorine and more. The website says you shouldn't use this bottle with water that is "microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality," but I used it in natural freshwater and I turned out fine.

Unlike the CrazyCap and the Larq, the Mahaton bottle doesn't have an additional purification setting for bodies of water that might contain more contaminants, such as streams and other sources of groundwater. For that reason, I'd recommend only using the Mahaton bottle with indoor sources of water unless the company releases a new bottle with an additional setting.   

While many sources of tap water and groundwater are perfectly safe, it's never worth the risk to drink water you aren't certain about. Even if it looks clean, it could be contaminated with bacteria, viruses, protozoa or other microorganisms invisible to the human eye. And despite the Safe Drinking Water Act, tap water can still contain contaminants such as arsenic, lead, chlorine, pesticides and even particles from malfunctioning wastewater treatment.

The Toddy uses either reusable felt filters, or special paper filters -- both options come in the box. Be advised that the Toddy is a tall contraption, particularly while straining grounds, so it won't fit underneath low kitchen cabinets. Brewing with the Toddy is also a manual affair and takes some practice to perfect. 

A single charge on the Larq can give you up to two full months of use, assuming you send it through three to four cleaning cycles (in normal mode) per day. If you use adventure mode, the charge will last up to 12 days.
