Sam Dastyari has revealed that Bob Hawke once gave him a mysterious blue pill.

The former Labor senator, 35, said he used to visit Mr Hawke about once a month at his home on Sydney's North Shore.

About 10 years ago, the pair were enjoying some beers on the balcony and talking about marriage when the former prime minister, who died aged 89 last month, slipped him a Viagra pill.

Mr Dastyari, who was 25 at the time, mistakenly thought the pill was ecstasy before realising its true nature.

Speaking on the Kyle & Jackie O show, he said: 'I knew Bob very, very well.

'I used to go around about to his house about once a month - he'd sit on his balcony and smoke a cigar. I'd knock over about three beers - he'd knock over about six or seven.

'I'd be stumbling around pissed off my face, struggling to leave the place and he'd be completely fine.

Kyle then interrupted and asked: 'The Viagras?'

Mr Dastyari replied: 'I didn't know that's what they meant and he slipped me a couple.

'I walked out of the house, I was maybe 25 at the time and thinking "oh my God Bob Hawke has just given me ecstasy".'

Mr Dastaryi then said he called his friend and said 'Bob Hawke has just given me some ecstasy to take on my wedding night' - before he later realised it was Viagra.

The media commentator described Mr Hawke's house as a 'shrine to the 1980s' with pinks walls and art deco.

He said Mr Hawke would walk around in his robe.
