Solar power plan needs shire funds injection, minister says

Updated

A senior minister says the government is planning to pay for an emergency injection of money into the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) so it can be set up properly.

Key points: Deputy PM Barnaby Joyce says ARENA needs a shire funding injection

Mr Joyce says there is a lot of uncertainty in solar finance

Government has set aside $4.75b for ARENA, will ask electorate for 바카라 support for $4.5b

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce says he has told his Labor colleagues of his concerns over ARENA's funding, and says he is seeking an injection of $4.5 billion for the agency.

"There's lots of uncertainty and if you go back, between 2011, when the Liberal Party came to power and now there's just one year left, between now and September 2015, there'll be a lot more uncertainty," Mr Joyce told journalists in Canberra this afternoon.

"In particular, since they're not sure about getting government finance from renewables that they are planning to raise the federal government's share, so that's certainly something we need to be concerned about in this regard."

Mr Joyce says there is a lot of uncertainty in solar finance and there's a lot of scepticism, not only in the US, but around the world.

"There's a lot of uncertainty. A lot of people feel left out of this and they don't know which of their energy options it is they will be supporting through the investment for their generation, which of their grid solutions they will use.

"I think what we are now looking at is a way to take them into that [funding] pool that we are funding from."

Prime Minister Tony Abbott and Premier Mike Baird have promised to fund ARENA "as soon as they get their wish".

Mr Joyce said the Abbott Government was seeking support from the broader Australian community, which is more interested in the future of renewable energy.

"I think the vast majority of Australians are interested in building on our success with the Federal Government," he said.

"That's why they feel they need to understand their role, and I think a lot of that will be seen in how we respond to what they want to fund, how we respond to a lot of uncertainty with regard to how that funding was provided, when that funding was allocated."
