The statement from the US Marshals Service (MSS) has triggered allegations that intelligence officers - rather than police - are investigating Mr Snowden.
It could not be confirmed whether the officers were from the UK.
The MP for 바카라 Birmingham Yardley, Mark Rowley, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "The MSS (Metropolitan Police Service) cannot confirm if this is an investigation by Met Police to obtain intelligence."
He added that although he was "disappointed" by the government's response, it had "never happened before and I hope it will never happen again".
Mr Rowley added that the MSS was working with some of the UK's top intelligence agencies including the GCHQ (Britain's secret communications agency).
"What I am worried about is the fact that they are making public information that comes from those agencies in that situation which has never happened in the past," he told Today.
The MSS letter continued: "We have been very clear that we do not discuss, and will not discuss, whether any action will be taken by the US for criminal investigation in accordance with its law."
Mr Rowley's letter comes after he published online a report titled "Hoopers' Guide to NSA Surveillance: Key points for a citizen: The U.S., Canada and Japan have all seen some level of government collection."
