Doctor says indigenous health a national shame

The nation's indigenous health team was in dire need of funds but the Liberal government spent $300,000 of them trying to make it happen, a new report reveals.

In a scathing report, a former minister says the federal government did not prioritise the $16 million it spent in 2006 on Health Canada's indigenous health fund. The fund was supposed to be given in 2006. Instead, the government spent $100,000 on it and another $50,000 in 2007.

"This was an example of 'birtherism.' First there was a bunch of crank claims, which was nothing new, and then the government came in and said, well, let's do it and let's give it to the native people in Canada," Health Minister Peter MacKay told the House of Commons Tuesday.

While the government has been slow to implement measures to reduce Aboriginal deaths — a situation that is worsening by the day, reports say — many health experts blame the $14 million the fund has been getting over the past couple of years on some sort of political push to reduce funds for the government's own Health Ministry.

The money, which covers programs like maternal, 바카라 neonatal and child health, is a "non-recurring item," says the report, due to ongoing cuts to its budget. In addition to the $14 million the Aboriginal Health Team has been getting, health workers in many communities have not been getting basic care like medication.

One example comes from the town of Eenook, located about 45 kilometres northwest of Saskatoon, where the team was supposed to operate 24 hours a day. The community now has a full-time day nurse, who was not given training. The Health Ministry says the problem is one of equipment costs.
