The movie huffs and puffs, but there’s no fear of any houses being blown down. Sadly, Abominable fails to carve out its own place in a crowded field. It’s not a total write-off: There’s a moment of surpassing loveliness when Yi plays her violin at the Leshan Giant Buddha in Sichuan. And you’ll laugh at the scenes with the whopping snakes and feel a touch of magic when Everest uses his vocal rumble to create visual wonders.

At least the film begins with a bold p.o.v. Zara (Sarah Paulson), a self-proclaimed animal lover who wears a big-eared rodent like a pirate wears a parrot. Everest meets Yi on the roof of the apartment building she shares with her mom (Michelle Wong) and grandmother (Tsai Chin), the latter of whom is so short she startles people by popping up behind a plate of dumplings. Since her father’s death, she’s worked odd jobs to visit the landmarks he wanted her to see. Yi’s childhood friend Jin, a vain med student who nods to China’s burgeoning upper middle class, and his dorky cousin Peng live one floor underneath, but Yi has disengaged from family and friendship. Luckily, each spot is en route to Mount Everest, give or take a thousand miles. of Everest breaking out of a holding facility run by Burnish’s zoologist Dr.

Yi has eyes like teacups and ankles like Clydesdales. Zara and Burnish, the type of naturalist who’d capture a rare snake and imagine it as a belt. The figures are pleasantly distorted in defiance of the trend toward naturalism. And at least Culton grants her Abominable Snowman the power to control nature, like a steroidal E.T. Once he closes his eyes, hums, and glows mint green, he can even make the earth ripple — a travel tip the gang uses less often than it should in its escape from Dr. As revenge, said reptile, the fictional Whooping Snake, steals the Stream Free Movie Abominable Online, even inspiring a much-appreciated ’90s rap joke that will soar over every kid’s head. (If you remember Tag Team, you can probably guess the gag.)

Yet its main interests are twofold: flog a new beast to supplant the successful "How to Train Your Dragon" franchise (here, the monster is Toothless the Night Fury with fur — as in, he’s basically a cool dog) and please its Chinese partners with an Asian travelogue that treks from megalopolis to Yangtze to Gobi to a 233-ft tall cliffside Buddha carved during the Tang dynasty. The latest offering from DreamWorks Animation gently alights on the fragile male ego.

Ultimately, "Abominable" wants to be a cinematic representation of its central character—lovable, sweet, and occasionally magical. But it actually feels more like the meanie corporate boss—more concerned with profit than creativity, trying to own a piece of the animated world that it doesn’t really understand.

Before you know it, Yi and two neighbors, the childish Peng (Albert Tsai) and the smooth-talker Jin (Tenzing Norgay Trainor), are traveling across the country to get Everest back to, well, Everest, and reunite him with his family. She realizes that the creature is not only harmless, but injured, and she heals its wound, giving it the name of Everest. That’s where he encounters Yi (Chloe Bennet), a tough girl who has been working odd jobs to save the money to take a trip across the country that she was planning to take with her recently-deceased father. Trailing them are a doctor voiced by Sarah Paulson and a villainous rare animal collector voiced by Eddie Izzard. Jill Culton’s film opens with a playful, adorable yeti breaking Stream Free Movie Abominable Online from his confinement in a Chinese metropolis and finding his way to a nondescript rooftop.

There are a few sequences in which Everest reveals he has magical powers that can impact nature—scenes in which giant blueberries chase our heroes down a hill or a yellow wave of flowers propels them forward—and it’s here where "Abominable" comes to life. It’s when it crashes back to the dull narrative and characters, that the magic of the journey disappears again. There’s also a captivating sequence at the Leshan Giant Buddha statue in Sichuan (even if it was a mistake to go to something as obvious as Coldplay on the soundtrack in that scene). It’s not that her strict mother (Michelle Wong) and dumpling-making grandmother (Tsai Chin) don’t bring on the love. It also could have gone further. The Chinese setting and characters are welcome and beautifully rendered, as is the film’s human protagonist, Yi (scrappily voiced by Chloe Bennett), a teen girl who’s been hit hard by the death of her father. But they can’t replace the dad who taught the young woman how to play the violin and filled her head with his own dreams of traveling to places like the Himalayas.
