South Korea, one of Asia's richest economies, has struggled for decades to improve safety standards and change widespread attitudes that treat safety as subservient to economic progress and convenience.

"There was no clothing left (on the workers) at all," said Seo Seung-hyun, head of the Icheon fire department. "We presume that an ignition of oil mist caused an explosion and that the sudden combustion gave the workers no chance to escape."

The pay gap is one of many diversity issues confronting companies in the tech industry. Silicon Valley has faced tough questions about the treatment of women and minorities, and the industry continues to struggle with recruitment, retention and promotion.

Today, though, Google has turned down the Google+ dial in its algorithm. Searches for Felicia Day, Wil Wheaton, and Ford Motor Company show Google+ results on the first page -- but those three are active on Google+. And Wheaton's and Day's Twitter pages rank higher in search results, as does Ford's Facebook page.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in called for officials to mobilise "all available resources" in the search and rescue operation, while Prime Minster Chung Sye-kyun visited the site to inspect the efforts.

The movie, starring Margot Robbie, failed to meet investors' expectations in the box office. Although the superhero film was the top earner in the box office, making $33.3million domestically, it fell well short of industry projections that it would open at between $50-55million.

The case against Lee centred on whether three horses donated by Samsung Group should be considered bribes aimed at winning Park's favour in the conglomerate's succession planning. The horses were given to the daughter of Park's confidante, Choi Seo-won, a professional equestrian.

Google -- and Bing and Yahoo, for that matter -- have moved beyond supplying just hyperlinks. They spruce up results with images or star ratings; blend in news, images, and videos; provide answers to questions; show business locations on maps; and spotlight retail outlets where products are available. Beyond traditional search engines come Apple's Siri software for its mobile devices, Google's competing voice-driven search apps, and any number of apps for plumbing the depths of sites such as Amazon. The Supreme Court overturned in August part of an appeals court bribery conviction against Samsung's de facto chief, who had been given a two-and-a-half-year suspended sentence for seeking favours from former president Park.

"Our detailed analysis reveals that even when factors such as age, job title and location are controlled for there is still an unexplainable pay gap between women and men -- and that isn't acceptable," Glassdoor CEO and co-founder Robert Hohman told CNET sister site TechRepublic.
