Nigella hits out after pa's are cleared of fraud and cheating


The women accused of a scam involving the purchase of millions of dollars' worth of goods in India told investigators that the real reason they were making hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth of fraudulent purchases was because they were poor, the Times of India reported.

Nigella O'Toole, a former model turned philanthropist, alleges in the suit that she used $300,000 of her charity's money for her personal use, and a friend allegedly bought a house for her and her young daughter for $10,000. "I worked hard for $10,000. I worked at McDonald's," O'Toole said in the complaint.

O'Toole did not purchase items in the case, because she knew that "she had to pay for the purchase with the proceeds of her charity," the newspaper said.

O'Toole was also accused of using her charity and the proceeds from her book deal to purchase "Nigella-themed apparel and other items in her stores in Los Angeles, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Cleveland, and several other cities." O'Toole does not own her stores.


O'Toole was one of several women sued in the wake of allegations that the alleged salespeople cheated customers out of thousands of dollars by making fictitious online deals.

According to a 2007 audit, 바카라 more than 1,400 people were scammed out of between $5,000 and $40,000 over a two-year period, largely by the purchase of "Nigella-themed clothing" and other branded merchandise.


Calls for stricter laws against online "buyers beware" have exploded in recent years, with the United States passing a law last year that makes it illegal for online retailers to sell products containing "harmful or deceptive" content, such as fake content.


Critics have said the law is an overreaction to a culture of online salesmen and salespeople who are in the business of fraud.

Some online buyers insist they are trying to get rich by investing money into real estate, instead of buying on the Internet.
