Every night, mere steps away from MarketSmiths' office doors, the next generation of comics and comedians is sharpening their skills at open mics and stand-up shows all around Brooklyn. There will be people that just don't Get paid to laugh you because they aren't your audience or don't understand what you're getting at when you explain a stripped down version of your joke. Some great comics are gonna have shitty sets. Most people try their hand and Stand-up and give up before they get their big chance, which is a huge shame.

You can just achieve that if you have mustered enough courage and trust to face the bunch and relay your jokes in a fashion that makes your listeners laugh. If it's your first time running a comedy event and you're targeting comedians who are at the start of their careers, perhaps it would be best to pick a venue that will reflect this.

Again, there's no one way to do this, but whether you're taking your comical cues from Kathy Griffin or Chris Rock, the structure of a joke will generally be a story broken into two basic parts: the setup and the punch line. So that when people would say something nasty, I would immediately become very sympathetic to them and try to help them with their problem and try to work out what was upsetting them, and try to be very understanding with their anger.

My first class was called Stand Up 101, and I learned basic things: don't run the light (which means don't exceed your allotted time on stage — there's a light that a producer flashes to let you know you are almost finished, and running over your time is one of the rudest things you can do), the basic structure of a joke, and some tips and tricks.

The other required memoir for comedy writers is Tina Fey's Bossypants , which follows the 30 Rock comedian from her childhood to her head writing role at SNL. Sure, some comedians meet with early success, but for most, it takes years to build up different writing methods and delivery techniques that get more consistent laughs.

Comedian groups exist, just hang around a while, tell some jokes, and make small talk and you will eventually find yourself in one of them. You will learn a lot about your audience's reaction to you.
