He insisted that the party's official policy was to support Jeremy Corbyn, and claimed, without evidence, to have identified more than 400 potential candidates, without offering the names of any of the four party leaders or of any of his party colleagues who support a challenge.

"We will not give anyone else a free vote. We believe Jeremy Corbyn is the only person who can keep the Conservatives in government," he said. "We can't allow the political and social situation in the city to change."

The pair also called for the creation of an anti-fascism committee, so that those who do not want to remain in the Labour Party can still express their views, and warned that the party's leadership must change "the political calculus" behind any vote to call on the UK to stay in the European Union.

In his speech, Gillan and Tully said a parliamentary debate on Britain's membership in the EU would be the best way for the party to persuade its supporters to switch to "a more moderate, democratic opposition", but that it would also be "inevitable" that voters would vote against the party.

But others warned that the mood at the event appeared to be more positive than that of activists on Saturday.

Tommy Robinson, a member of the leftwing group Momentum, said the gathering was "a huge success", but urged other local campaigners to "stay on alert" until polls close at 20 September, the day before the election.
