Taxi council flags price rise

"This is just a proposal to take the pressure off the taxi industry as it has been in an environment of shortage for the past five years," said an official from the rail ministry, adding that there are around 20-25 taxi drivers and their drivers are earning just Rs 17 per day.

Meanwhile, the railways said that it is trying to provide all private cars and taxis with safe ride service by bringing in special vehicle-sharing services which will cover all other types of vehicles.

The service will be provided by an app called MyCar where individual drivers will be used to pick up passenger passengers from their homes with special assistance.

One such app will be developed that would be accessible only for a select group of users only. This will have to be approved by the board of directors.

On July 1, passengers with MyCar will be able to call in advance and book a ride between 12 noon and 9 pm, at the cost of Rs 7 per passenger, with an initial period of six hours.

The railways is also mulling on expanding its Uber service to Delhi and other major cities in the country. The company operates in over 30 cities and is currently available in 25 countries and territories across the globe.
